SURGERY
We offer a full range of surgical services for dogs, cats, rabbits, and pocket pets (guinea pigs, gerbils, rats hamsters, etc.). We offer nail trims and wing trims for birds. We would be happy to talk with you over the phone and schedule a surgical consult if needed. Some of the more common surgeries we perform are routine spays/neuters and dental cleanings. However, we also have the ability to perform mass removals as well as a wide range of other surgeries. We use very safe patient monitors while your pet is under anesthetic and always work to keep our surgical suite and instruments sterile.

CHECK-UP
What is a physical exam? First we establish what is normal for your pet by weighing and checking the body temperature.
When the doctor examines your pet, he/she looks at all the body systems. The teeth and gums are checked for plaque build-up, gum loss, or fractures. The mucus membranes are evaluated as to color and degree of hydration. Ears are examined for presence of wax, discharge, mites, etc. If necessary, an otoscope is used to look at the ear drum or a swab of material is taken to check with a microscope. The eyes can reflect internal problems as well as more easily detected problems like cataracts, corneal disease, and diseases of the eye lids. The skin and haircoat are evaluated for texture, color, quality, hair loss, and presence of external parasites. If any lumps or bumps are noted, these may require further evaluation. With a stethoscope, the doctor can listen for irregularities of the heart, either murmurs or abnormal beats and quality of lung sounds. The pulse quality is monitored also. Palpation of the abdomen(carefully feeling the outline and consistency of abdominal organs) is important even in animals that appear outwardly normal. It is important for you to report to the doctor anything unusual that you have noticed regarding your pet---changes in urination and elimination patterns, changes in appetite or energy level, increased water consumption or lameness. Don't be afraid to ask questions or report anything that doesn't seem normal to you. |

PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
Preventive Medicine involves regular attention to well pet care. Even with conscientious attention and careful monitoring of normal behaviors, it is easy to miss the early signs of disease.
Regular cleaning of the teeth is important either at home, when there no calcified plaque build-up or here at the hospital when plaque build-up is advanced. We can recommend appropriate chewing materials for prevention of plaque build-up(CET chews, Dentabones, Dental rings) as well as tooth brushes and toothpaste in dog appealing flavors. Large size kibble (T/D), formulated to provide more chewing exercise, is useful for both dogs and cats. Unfortunately some pets are more prone to plaque build-up and will be more likely to require thorough cleaning under an anesthetic.
We all know it is easier to keep excess weight from building up than it is to eliminate extra pounds already in place! We are happy to help you evaluate your pet's weight and make dietary recommendations before the problem becomes overwhelming. During well pet exams be sure to ask for recommendations. |

LABORATORY
We offer many in-house and outside lab services for your pet. We routinely perform fecal exams and ear smears and are constantly looking under the microscope at something in order to help keep your pet healthy. Although we have the ability to perform basic blood tests in-house, we often send blood work to an outside lab. This allows us to obtain fast and accurate results and the doctors then have the ability to consult with the pathologist who worked with the sample. |

BOARDING
We provide limited boarding services due to space restrictions. It is necessary that we reserve space for hospitalized pets and pets whose medication and health needs require a little extra attention when their owners are away. All animal are walked outside on leash three times daily except on Sundays when it is twice daily. If you wish to board an animal please call well in advance. We are happy to make recommendations for area kennels. However, our boarding facility may be ideal for you if your pet requires frequent medical attention. We are able to administer medication or injections as needed and keep close records of your pet's behavior while they are here. |

BEHAVIOR COUNSELING
We are happy to discuss behavior problems such as separation anxiety, aggression, destructive digging,
barking, or self-mutilation. There may be other problems, too, of minor or major concern. These may be addressed during a yearly health exam or a separate appointment which may be scheduled if the problem is of great concern and much background information needs to be gathered. Sometimes the whole family is involved in the diagnosis and treatment of complicated problems. Underlying medical problems should always be addressed first such as seizure disorders, aging changes, or internal medicine problems(urinary tract disease, diabetes, loss of vision, etc). We can also recommend trainers for basic obedience. |
